FOUNDERS
How it started
Dan and Matty met through the Canadian Guitar Shows in 2023 and kept having the same conversation: Calgary has amazing players and industry folks, so why aren’t we in the same room more often. Out of the chats in bars and late-night messages came the Calgary Guitar Collective.

Dan Clayton is a guitarist, instructor, and host of the Fret Success YouTube channel. He combines hands-on teaching with experience in branding, marketing, and video, and frequently runs workshops, tuition sessions, and interviews. With a background in acoustics, noise, and health, Dan brings a practical ear to the craft. He has also played in various musical acts across genres for both original music and covers, he’s also a competent vocalist. He’s shared stages with various bands over the years including Ash and Jon Fratelli.
Why CGC: I started Calgary Guitar Collective to give players from every background, including industry folks, a place to connect, support each other, trade ideas and learn.
MATTY MCKAY
IG: @mattymckayguitar
Matty McKay is a Calgary multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, producer, and engineer with nearly two decades in the Canadian music scene. A five-time CCMA Guitar Player of the Year and member of the CCMA Musician Hall of Honour, he’s toured and recorded extensively, including bandleader/musical director roles with Brett Kissel. His credits span multiple No. 1 and top-charting releases, from guitar and vocals on “We Were That Song” to sessions and production work tied to “Drink About Me” and other projects, alongside producing for rising Canadian artists.
Why CGC: I’m in this to help Calgary’s players connect across experience levels and job titles, from weekend strummers to working pros. We wanted a space that’s welcoming, practical, and industry-literate, where people can swap ideas, build confidence, and leave every meetup playing better.
THE VISION
The goal is simple. Make a welcoming place to learn, share ideas, and build relationships as part of Calgary’s guitar playing community that last.
Why we’re doing it
We want to bring players and the industry together more often. Working pros and weekend strummers. Builders, techs, and educators. We also want younger players to see pathways into the industry, meet mentors, and get real advice that helps.
What you can expect
Practical sessions that make you better next time you plug in. Conversations with people who actually do the work. A relaxed room where you can meet collaborators, try gear, and leave with something useful. No ego. Be kind. Lift each other up.
